Impeller Failure
The water pump impeller is the most critical part you’ve never thought about. A failed impeller means no cooling water — and an overheated engine can seize in minutes. Annual replacement is the single best money you’ll spend.
Ethanol Fuel Damage
Florida’s E10 fuel absorbs moisture and separates in the tank over time. Corroded carbs, clogged VSTs, and fuel injector deposits are almost entirely preventable with proper annual fuel system service and ethanol treatment.
Lower Unit Gear Case Failure
Gear lube absorbs water through worn seals and turns milky — then the gears corrode and fail. Annual lube changes and seal inspection catch this before it becomes a $1,200 gear case rebuild.
Corrosion in the Power Head

Engine Flush & Visual Inspection
Fresh water flush, exterior inspection for corrosion, damage, and wear. We check zincs, anodes, rigging hardware, and steering components while we’re in there.
Impeller & Water Pump Service
Water pump impeller replacement, housing inspection, and thermostat test. This is non-negotiable every 100 hours or annually — whichever comes first.
Fuel System Service
Fuel filter replacement, fuel system inspection for ethanol damage, VST or carb inspection, and ethanol stabilizer recommendation for your usage pattern.
Oil & Gear Lube Change
Four-stroke oil and filter change, lower unit gear lube drain and fill, and inspection for water intrusion (milky lube = failed seal — caught now, not at the boat ramp).
Spark Plugs & Ignition
Plug replacement, spark gap check, ignition timing verification where applicable, and throttle body or carb sync on multi-cylinder engines.
Compression Test & Sea Trial
Compression tested on all cylinders. Full-throttle sea trial or tank test to verify performance, RPM range, shifting, and that there are zero alarms or fault codes.

Common Questions — Outboard Service in Pinellas County
How often should I service my outboard motor in Florida?
Annually at minimum, or every 100 hours — whichever comes first. Florida’s salt environment, UV exposure, and year-round use accelerate wear compared to northern boats that sit all winter. If you’re running 200+ hours a year, consider a mid-season check at 100 hours. The impeller alone is worth servicing every single year without exception.
My outboard is running rough or losing power — what could it be?
Most rough-running complaints come down to five things: clogged fuel filter, dirty/corroded fuel injectors or carburetors, worn spark plugs, low compression in one or more cylinders, or a sticking VST float. Intermittent issues — where the engine runs fine sometimes and rough others — are usually fuel delivery related, especially on boats sitting with ethanol fuel. We diagnose before replacing anything.
What does an outboard tune-up cost in Pinellas County?
A standard annual service on a 4-stroke outboard typically runs $250–$450 depending on engine size and how many cylinders. That includes impeller, oil/filter change, gear lube, plugs, and fuel filter. If we find additional issues during the service, we quote separately and get your approval before proceeding.
My engine overheated and shut down — is it ruined?
Not necessarily, but don’t run it again until a mechanic evaluates it. Modern outboards have over-temp protection that shuts the engine down before catastrophic damage — if it tripped that circuit, there’s a good chance the powerhead is fine. We’ll check for head gasket failure, thermostat issues, blocked impeller passages, and check compression. Sometimes it’s a $200 fix. Sometimes it’s more. But running it again before diagnosis almost always makes it worse.
Can you service outboards at the marina or do you need me to bring it in?

Is there milky or foamy oil in my gear case — how bad is that?
That’s water in the gear lube, which means a failed seal. Catch it early and it’s a seal replacement and fresh gear lube — usually $150–$300. Leave it and the water corrodes the gears themselves — that’s a full lower unit rebuild starting at $800. If you see this, call us this week, not next month.
