What St. Petersburg Boaters Actually Need on Their Electronics

Tampa Bay has specific navigational challenges that make certain electronics non-negotiable — not just nice-to-have.

🗺️

Chartplotter with Current Charts

Tampa Bay’s channels shift. Shoals that weren’t there last year are there now. A chartplotter with current Navionics or C-MAP charts — and ideally a depth sounder to verify what the chart shows — is the baseline for safe Bay navigation.

🚢

AIS for Tampa Shipping Lane

Tampa’s shipping channel runs right through the Bay. Commercial vessels doing 15 knots in fog or at night are invisible until they’re on top of you — unless you have AIS. We install Class B AIS transponders that show commercial traffic on your chartplotter screen and make you visible to ship traffic.

📻

DSC-Enabled VHF Radio

Digital Selective Calling on a fixed-mount VHF with a registered MMSI number automatically transmits your GPS position to Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg on Channel 70 when you press the distress button. It’s USCG Group St. Pete’s first question when a boat goes missing — “did they have DSC registered?”

🐟

Structure & Live Sonar

St. Pete’s inshore fishery — snook on the grass flats, redfish along the mangroves at Weedon Island, tarpon under the Skyway — rewards anglers who can see the structure. LiveScope and Mega Imaging installations that show fish in real time, not just bottom contour.

🧭

Autopilot for Offshore Runs

Running the Egmont Key channel and heading west into the Gulf for kingfish or grouper is a long straight run where autopilot pays for itself in fatigue reduction alone. Proper installation with hydraulic helm pump and a quality course computer makes a real difference.

🔦

Night Running Setup

Radar installation, proper nav light circuitry, and spotlight wiring for boaters who run before dawn or after sunset. Tampa Bay’s crab trap field near the main shipping channel is a nightmare without radar in low visibility conditions.

Our Installation Process

We design the system around your boat and how you actually use it — then install it right the first time.

Consultation

We talk through how you use your boat, where you fish or cruise, and what electronics you want. We make brand and model recommendations based on your actual use case, not what has the biggest margin.

Helm Layout Design

Before cutting any holes, we mock up the helm layout. Mounting position, screen viewing angle at the helm and the bow, switch panel placement, and cable routing paths all get planned out.

Clean Installation

Marine-grade tinned wire, proper strain relief, labeled conductors, and hidden cable runs wherever possible. Your helm should look factory when we’re done — not like a DIY job.

Configuration & Sea Trial

Every unit powered up, paired, and configured. Transducer tested at speed. VHF DSC registered. NMEA network verified. We go through every feature with you before you leave.

FAQ — Marine Electronics Installation St. Petersburg

Do I need AIS in Tampa Bay?

It’s not legally required for recreational vessels, but it’s one of the best safety investments you can make if you run Tampa Bay regularly. The shipping channel sees tankers and container ships moving through regularly — at night or in fog, they’re invisible without AIS. Class B transponders also make you visible to those commercial vessels on their own AIS displays. The install cost is typically $300–$600 all-in.

What chartplotter brand do you recommend for Tampa Bay?

For inshore and bay fishing, Garmin’s ECHOMAP Ultra and GPSMAP series offer excellent shallow-water chart detail and the best LiveScope integration. For offshore and bluewater use out of Egmont Key, Simrad’s NSS and NSO series offer better long-range routing and radar integration. We install all brands and will tell you honestly what fits your use case and budget.

How do I register my VHF radio for DSC?

After we install your radio, you’ll need to register your vessel’s MMSI number with Sea Tow or BoatUS for free, or through the FCC if you travel internationally. We walk you through the process during the installation — it takes about 10 minutes and most St. Pete boaters never do it, which defeats the purpose of having DSC.

Can you upgrade my existing electronics without rewiring everything?

Often yes. Modern electronics with NMEA 2000 can integrate with existing wiring using backbone adapters. We assess what’s there and tell you what’s worth keeping versus what needs to be redone. Sometimes it’s more cost-effective to start fresh — we’ll give you an honest assessment.
